The most important part of any actively efficient building is the mechanical system: the heating and cooling of indoor air and the heating of water. McKinley Greens units all employ the systems listed below.
In both the first story slab and second story floor joists, a radiant heat system will be installed. No forced-air propelling dust and allergens, but a quiet, constant source of gentle warmth. The first floor stained and sealed concrete slab will serve as an efficient thermal mass.

Natural gas fired tankless water heaters will both heat the radiant floor system and, in combination with a recirculating pump system, will supply an endless stream of hot water on demand.
Located in the second floor ceiling, whole house fans will cool each unit. This system will draw cooler outside air near the ground into the lower level. Warmer air at the higher levels inside is vented into the attic space. The super-heated attic air is exhausted through vents cooling the attic space.
INSULATION
R-23 spider - Blown-in batt exterior walls
R-38 - Vaulted ceiling batts
R-49 - Flat ceiling blown-in
R-30 - Underfloor batts
R-10 - Slab insulation
(All of the above exceed requirement for Central Oregon.)
WINDOWS: Energy Star rated U-35, also exceeding local building codes.
Energy Star APPLIANCES and FLORESCENT RECESSED LIGHTING will also help obtain significant savings in the total cost of utility bills.
QUALITY AIR
The advanced construction and upgraded insulation features of these homes will result in a remarkably "tight" structure - that is, virtually no air migration into or out of the homes. To ensure a constant supply of "new" air and moisture control, each unit will employ a Heat Recovery Ventilation System which will replace stale, contaminated air with moisture-free fresh air.
